“It was second to none, kept everyone engaged and interested. Our STEM Ambassador is coming back to do a second follow on in January”

Jessica, leader of a Home Educated community STEM Club

Did you know that 2018 will be the Year of Engineering, a national campaign to increase awareness and understanding of what engineers do among young people aged 7-16, their parents and their teachers. We look forward to seeing how our Engineer STEM Ambassadors can get involved in this.

We run a range of different projects focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) engagement and learning, supporting young people across the South West to maximise the career opportunities that the skills and knowledge gained from these subjects can bring to them.

Studying STEM subjects’ supports young people to develop the following critical competencies;

  • Curiosity and creativity
  • Interpretation and evaluation
  • Observation and inquiry
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Technical and technological knowledge
  • Maths, financial literacy, data and statistical confidence
  • Innovation and strategic thinking
  • Team work and collaboration

Cornwall – Year 7 STEM programme

CSW Group is working in partnership with Cornwall Education Business Partnership to deliver a programme of activity focussed on STEM to year 7 students at 9 schools in Cornwall.

The project is funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company fund and will be delivered in the 2017-18 academic year. The purpose is to capture the enthusiasm of young people as they commence their secondary education and maintain their interest in STEM subjects. The programme will comprise;

  • A STEM Enterprise Day for the whole of Year 7, engaging with local employers;
  • Optional STEM clubs to follow on for students who wish to take part, the clubs will have input and support from STEM Ambassadors;
  • Development of a project that can be entered in to a CREST (link) award;
  • Access to a local competition to form part of the Big Bang SW regional programme of events, with the chance to progress to the regional and national finals;

The project will also support the engagement of businesses in schools, and will work alongside other existing provision, such as the Enterprise Adviser Network funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company. CSW Group provides the STEM Ambassador hub in Devon and Cornwall and will use this service to engage STEM ambassadors in this project, and recruit new businesses and volunteers to the scheme.
